September 30, 2000, 1:16 pm

Bungie.org was recently honored by Inside Mac Games! Read this article for the details. Thanks, IMG- and to the rest of the Bungie fans out there who inspire us to be as good as we can be. Rest assured this only means we'll try harder...

Marathon

Two new scenarios... one sounds quite cool. Mages? Townsfolk? It's all at Scenario News.

Today at Marathon Open Source: Aleph One begins to support alternative sound formats. Does this mean Marathon will play MP3 files now?

Halo

Tons of great new fan fiction today over at HBO. Check it out!

September 29, 2000, 4:51 pm

This has also been posted at HBO, but we feel it deserves a mention here as well.

Rampancy.net has a story that every Halo fan should read. Cannibal Harry, a Bungie fan with a bigheart, now has a big (whopping big) ISP bill to go with it. From the outside, it sounds like Earthlink (his ISP) was either astoundingly ignorant of what was going on on its servers, or just plain greedy. In any case, you should read this thread on the R.net forum, and this explanation from Harry himself. And let us HOPE that this gets resolved in a reasonable manner... because it's not only a problem for CH, it's a problem for everyone who tries to do his part in a fan community.

Marathon

Today on Marathon's Story: Mild-manneredT-shirt designer Jon Chang enters the world of big books and orbital halos. Could this leadto more insight into Halo's storyline?

Oni

Oni Central has the report today: An article atMacCentral cites quotations from Bungie staffers concerning the newly-proposed Januaryrelease date. Could it be true?

We'd like to take this opportunity to remind our readers that the Marathon Physics Model Archiveis looking for a few good Marathon physics models. Marathon

Good news for scenario designers- the latest addition to Aleph One makes the Marathon engine even more extensible. Now all we need is a new editor to take advantage of these changes... Information on all this and more is available at Marathon Open Source.

Bad news for Marathon fans on Windows- Orbital Arm is still down. Never fear, though; it will be back up shortly. ("Define 'shortly'", said the man with the tommy gun...)

Movies, comics- who knew the Marathon's Story page could be so entertaining? Find it all here... and in all seriousness, if you haven't been reading the Marathon comic there over the past few days, it's not too late!

A previously known scenario gets a name change... and a progress update. Head on over to Scenario News for "the rest of the story".

Myth

A new old mapmaking group? Yeah, you read that correctly. If that's not enough, how about another update at MythMaster Central- or better yet... a new map from Creation? Get all the details at our Myth site.

Halo

At this past July's Macworld convention, Bungie debuted a home-brewed nVidia commercial using the Halo engine. The full movie is finally available for download at HBO; a current list of site mirrors is also available there.

Just a note to explain our downtime: On Sunday, September 24th, the circuit upon which bungie.org resides went down, at 11 am EST. A trouble report was filed. The telco did some testing, and decided there really wasn't a problem (even though the circuit remained down) at around 3 pm EST. It bounced up and down until around 5:15, at which time it went down hard. At 8 pm, a tech showed up at the site, and did some testing, declaring all repaired at 10 pm... 3 minutes before the CSU card died a horrible death. At that point, bungie.org was cut off from the outside world. Trouble was diagnosed by Central Office as a dead repeater card in the span reaching the site... a shift supervisor apologised that the line tech couldn't be reached (at this point, it was 11:30 pm EST), but promised that he'd be in the field at 7 am, installing the card.

At 9:15, the line tech showed up at the site, saying that tests from the Central Office had suggested the line was up and fine at 5:30 am, so he didn't rush to the field. Nothing could be farther from the truth... not a byte had left the site since the card died the night before. The tech apologised, and headed into the field. At 4 pm EST on Monday afternoon, he returned and said all was working again.

At 6 pm, the connection died again - hard. Calls to the Central Office were met with promises that techs had been dispatched, and that the problem would be solved quickly. At 12:40 am EST (yes, that's almost one in the morning), the same tech who'd showed up at 9:15 called to say that they'd traced the problem to a dead repeater card... but since it was the middle of the night, they wouldn't be able to replace it before morning.

Now, you might be thinking, "isn't that what they'd decided the problem was over a day before? And hadn't they said they were gonna replace that at 7 am the previous morning?" You know what? Those are reasonable questions. I asked those same questions. There were no forthcoming answers.

At 12:00, the office of the president of the telco was called, because answers from the technical office were less than useful. An hour later, the line came up. The repeater card, it seemed, had finally been located, and replaced. There are still glitches (I've been monitoring short outages all afternoon), but the line seems to be stable again, sort of.

Moral of the story: If you live in Connecticut, and a line tech named Larry from SNET comes to your door, don't open it. He's not a good person.

Marathon

The Story page has been reliving the very cool Marathon comic, from Miha, created years ago... stop by for some nostalgia! Also lots of good Marathon sightings, cryptic messages decoded, and on and on...

Marathon on Sparcs and Alpha (but not Windows boxes yet), a new Mac version of Aleph One, and Kaleidoscope-like themes! Wow, those guys working on Marathon: Open Source are staying busy!

The August Map of the Month has been chosen... and it's a doozy! Net play for non-networked computers... what more could you want?

Mac Assault has been re-uploaded. Hot damn, it starts now. (There still seems to be a problem with the Sounds file... but it's quite playable, compared to the last version.) Go take a look at the Scenario News page for details!

New maps at the Archives, with more coming in the next day or so. They're like the Eveready bunny... they just keep coming, and coming... Also, a few minor changes to the search script have been implemented, with one MAJOR effect: there is no longer a limit on the size of the returned results. Go ahead, search for all files! If your browser can handle the multimegabyte return, so can our script. :) (Okay, don't really try it... more than likely, your browser CAN'T handle it, and we don't want the angry emails about how we crashed your machine.)

Orbital Arm is still down. We know about the problem, and we're working on it... we ask you to have patience, we'll get it back up as soon as we can.

Oni

New fan art, new cover art, and more juicy forum tidbits... Oni Central has some good stuff for you!

Halo

The Halo news continues to flow, even in these lean times. And there's always something interesting going on over in the forum!

September 12, 2000, 11:02 pm

Marathon

Aleph One on the Alpha, BeOS, and various other Unix flavors... and a users manual. Woohoo! The Source is where it's at.

Chisel updates (for 68K users... there are still folks running 68k machines?) and a Fuxource update, are now available at the Archives. Of potentially greater importance to a large number of you: the Archives have now been moved to a different machine... please, if you've had trouble in the past downloading large files, try again, and send feedback!

Hamish is back, and clearing out that inbox! The Story page should be a hodgepodge of good stuff for the next few days, until he catches up. Swing by and see what he's got!

Criminal hijinks, delayed and dead scenarios... Get your news fix at the Scenario News page. (When is RED going to make it over to the "Completed" list?)

Myth

A new forum hits the Myth world... check the Myth page for details!

September 1, 2000, 5:20 pm

Marathon

Aleph One is now available on FreeBSD, Linux, and running on the Timex Sinclair (well, okay, maybe not the Sinclair - that's being reserved for Halo). It's also being Carbonized, to run in MacOSX's protected memory space. Go see what's new at Marathon: Open Source!

New maps at the Archives... mostly netmaps for the time being, but wait a few days, there are several big solo projects on the horizon...

As the Scenario News page says, there's a TON of stuff on the horizon. How far is the horizon? Good question. Don't ask us... ask the scenario creators. But 'close' is a good estimate for at least three projects (with two more not very far behind).

Unfortunately, Orbital Arm is STILL down, due to nastinesses inherent in the Windows operating system. We're working on it... thanks for your patience.

Myth

A new map site has sprung up... Myth@Bungie.org has the details. (The site itself seems a bit broken, but the maps are viewable with a bit of work.)

Oni

Oni has officially gone beta... read all about it at Oni Central!

Halo

Lots of new submissions, more Xbox news, and a nice SETI reset over at HBO... for a slow news period, they're managing to stay busy!
